♫It’s beginning to look a lot like a feature, ♫ everywhere we dig, ♫ (well, one of the trenches anyway). Sorry, no idea about musical notes but it is looking very interesting. We are now kept in suspense until the New Year as members are having a break for Christmas. There is also some planning to do as next year we hope to have at least a couple of opportunities for community digs. These take a lot of planning and we need appropriate permissions so lots to do.

Today some AiM members worked on Trench 1 while other members began Trench 2 - as in photograph. Next week, on 15 December, we should begin to hopefully answer some questions, as long as the weather is as good as it was today.

Today's dig went really well and we are now approaching what could be a very interesting context. But we will all have to wait until next time as the light was fading.

We started a new trench today to investigate an area of a field which is showing as high resistivity from a survey we did earlier this year. After probing the ground which confirmed something pretty solid we laid out the trench and made a start. We will continue with this next week.

Among the finds was a section of bone; probably cow or horse. It appears there are cut marks on this side.

Today we dug a test pit to investigate a raised linear feature that ran across one of the fields in isolation. We have our answer – nothing archaeological and no reason for the feature was apparent from today’s results. At least we know. On Tuesday we will be spending time doing a resistivity survey before we move into a different field for our next excavation.

Today there was yet more water in the trench but luckily the area with water was ready to be back filled. However, the stones we needed to check out to see if they were archaeological or just random stones needed to be bailed out – hence a session of dam building first. The stones proved to be random stones so the trench was back filled. It seems the resistivity survey was picking up natural variations in the ground rather than anything archaeological. At least we know that now and so on to...

The trench containing a lot of water and resembling yet another plunge pool, (we had this situation last winter too, although this one looks more like a lane in a swimming pool) had to be bailed out this morning before we could dig any more out. Surprisingly, once the water and surface mud was out, we managed to get down to 50cm depth. We were beginning to think that the resistivity had just picked up the natural variations rather than archaeology but, as always at the last minute, we came...

Today started off well but then went downhill with the rain until we had to abandon the dig. It was one of those days when our hard work didn't seem to be getting us much further, we seemed to be at 33 cm depth for ages! (It is a 4m trench though and the ground very hard and compact) Anyway, we have now reached a new context. While the finds have dwindled there is still a considerable amount of charcoal spread throughout the trench. We will see what next time brings (at least we are now below...
